Relax To Help Heal

Relax.

I had no idea how much tension I was carrying in my body until I started applying some of the mind-body coaching tools I have learned.

Unlike animals, most of the busy women with whom I work have a hard time doing it.

The simple act of being aware of tension in my body helped me relax in many ways. And, I believe, that awareness helped me heal or diminish some of my chronic ailments, such as back pain.

When we are constantly in “flight-or-fight” mode, we release “stress-hormone” chemicals, like cortisol, into our bodies.

These chemicals can be helpful in preparing you for a stressful event.

However, if we stay in chronic “stress mode,” this can lead to disease, according to Dr. Dean Ornish and other medical experts.

Practicing relaxation techniques, according to Dr. Ornish, can increase blood flow to your heart and help your body access its natural healing abilities.

Dr. Lissa Rankin, M.D., a best-selling author and expert on mind-body healing says:

  • Our bodies are self-healing organisms.
  • Stressful thoughts hamper our ability to heal.
  • The body’s natural self-repair mechanisms only fully function when the nervous system is in relaxation response.

Instead of waiting for that vacation to relax, can you find a few minutes during your day to do nothing but sit and breathe? You can set a timer on your phone to remind yourself to do this.

When you do this, notice if you are holding any tension in your shoulders or elsewhere in your body.

If you are, just notice what you are thinking at that moment.

See if you can let go of one stressful thought – and then see how your body feels!
