Simple Agreements For A Happy Life

Don Miguel Ruiz is a surgeon and author who had a near-death experience that changed his life. After that experience, he created the “Five Agreements,” based on ancient Native American Toltec wisdom. When we break these agreements, according to Mr. Ruiz, we cause needless suffering to ourselves and others. Here are the agreements, followed by my thoughts about them.

  1. Be Impeccable With Your Word.
Do not break your word, and always say what you mean. Don’t gossip and do not, especially, break your word to yourself. If you tell yourself you will go to the gym, do what you say! Resist gossiping about others and instead put that energy into something positive. If everyone did that, it would be amazing for our world.
  2. Don’t Take Anything Personally.
What people do – or don’t do – is not because of you. Quite often, people are choosing what they want or avoiding pain and their actions have nothing to do with you. Do not worry about other people’s opinions or actions, and you will avoid suffering. For sensitive people, this is a very hard one, but I love the idea.
  3. Don’t Make Assumptions.
Don’t assume anything about anyone or anything. Ask questions and express what you want. “With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life,” Mr. Ruiz says.
  4. Always Do Your Best.
This is probably my favorite agreement because it recognizes that we all fail, and that we need to try again when we mess up. “Your best” may differ from day to day. But if you honor doing your best, you can avoid beating yourself up when you break an agreement.
  5. Be Skeptical, But Learn To Listen.
Listening is a very powerful skill. Use the power of doubt to determine whether something is really true. You can decide whether to react or not react, agree or disagree, depending on what you want.

I’d love to hear if you are trying these agreements!

How Are YOU So Fabulous?

That was one of the questions we asked each other during lunch at my “EXHALE” Retreat last weekend.

At first some of the fabulous women found it hard to find ways to say why they were so fabulous. (And there were ALL so fabulous!)

One of the participants, Deb, told me she couldn’t resonate with the word. I told Deb and others to keep asking the question, and you will find an answer.

The next day, Deb she said surprisingly found herself internally saying how FABULOUS and fantastic she is.

When we ask questions that expand and open us, we come up with answers that excite and motivate us.

If we ask questions that “beat us up,” like, ‘why haven’t I lost weight or why haven’t I found my purpose?,” we usually feel terrible.

And more importantly, those negative questions typically don’t move us forward.

We are ALL fabulous, each in our own unique ways.

Keep asking, “How Am I So Fabulous?”

I’d love to hear how YOU are SO Fabulous!

Does The Law Of Attraction Work?

I once had a job where I was getting paid the exact salary I had written down 6 months prior, when I had made a list of goals I was excited about.

It was a high number, but not an unreachable one. When I found my note 6 months later, I freaked out. What I had written down had come true! And I had reached this goal by working “part-time” – not adding hours.

Also crazy: Two other items on my list became realities.

Did the “Law of Attraction” create my wishes? Yes and No.

I do NOT believe that you can just think about what you want and the universe delivers. This is how some people describe the Law of Attraction.

BUT I do believe the “Law of Attraction” works WHEN you:

1. Are internally clear about who you TRULY are;
2. Have taken time to identify goals that EXCITE you; and
3. Are crystal clear and SPECIFIC about those goals.

Exactly how did the Law of Attraction work in my situation? I’m not sure.

I’m super practical and I’m skeptical about many things.

In my situation, I followed the steps. Then I let it go. But I didn’t just sit on the couch either.

In my experience, your desires are much harder to create if there is an energy of fear, scarcity, grasping, – or just “thinking” you deserve something.

The MOST important step – getting internally clear about who you TRULY are – comes from an inner place where you are peaceful and grounded, and in touch with yourself and what makes you happy.

I have seen magical opportunities appear that help my clients when they get clear about who they are, and when they are excited and specific about their goals.

Getting internally aligned is what Martha Beck calls your “core of peace.” It is accessed through activities like meditation or journaling.

When you are internally aligned, magic happens. Synchronicities occur. People and things are attracted to you.

I would love to hear what “magic lists” you are creating!!
